Kites
In Indian Skies |
 |
|
 |
In India, the kites
were linked to romantic
life since ages.
One young used kite
to carry his love-letter
to his beloved by
diving it on her
terrace! The kites
came from Central
Asia and were patronized
by the Indian Kings.
We find in the Mughal
era young princes,
their sisters, and
some times their
fathers-the ‘Shahenshas’
themselves climbed
palace rooftops
to indulge in the
sport. They enjoyed
in keeping the kite
static in the air.
Shah Alam-I, the
King of Delhi (1707)
and later his grandson
were grand-masters
in the sport. They
could eliminate
any challenger with
their prowess at
the ‘pench’-entanglement.
Kiting became, in
India, a distinctive
sport, very different
from the decorative
but passive pastime
practiced in other
Asian and western
countries.
The sport flourished
in those luxurious
days of the ‘Nawabs’
and ‘Raja’s”.
Uttar Pradesh, Punjab,
Bengal and Delhi
became the art’s
strongholds. Lucknow,
the nations kiting
capital. Later on
the kites began
to fly in Rajasthan,
Gujarat and down
to Karnataka. |
